Friday Time- Peach Jelly, Tomatoes and The Plant

Did I mention that I finally went to our local farmer's market last weekend?

I loved it..kind of like a tamed down version of a Grateful Dead concert..(not that I would know).

There was peace, love, a guy playing guitar, tie-dye, and locally grown food. I spent way more there than I would in the produce department of Kroger, but it really gives one a good feeling to buy something that wasn't shipped halfway around the world to get to you.

Anyhoo, the peaches I bought at one stand were quite overripe (but probably the best peaches I've ever had) and the Mr. suggested that I make jelly out of them. Having never done this before, I searched and found that I didn't have two of the "key" ingredients namely sure-jell and lemon juice. So I just winged it with some affirmation from this site that one really doesn't need pectin.

I took about a pound of peaches, cut them into small chunks, put em in the pan added a small amount of water (maybe 1/4 cup) and slowly brought to a boil while adding a total of 1 cup of sugar gradually. This cooked down for about an hour, maybe slightly more and then it was jelly! That was pretty easy. I just put it in a sterilized jar in the fridge, figuring we would no doubt eat it up this week. Here's what's left.

Yes, my counter is covered in flour. And no, I didn't bother to clean up for you:)

Also, on the tomato canning front. I am still kind of scared about canning, but there they are (some of what will hopefully be much more).

All snug and cozy. I may also try to make some tomato powder, too

This guy remember him?

At first I thought  he(or she) might be stinging nettle

As it grew, I wasn't so sure
We have a thing the two of us...
Now it's completely on it's side with little shoots coming up from the main stem.

I wonder what else it will do before winter.

This should be an interesting weekend with this hurricane in the mix. My thoughts and prayers are with you all in the path of her. The Weather Channel said there was one that followed about this same path back in 1821. Stay safe!

  5. I love shopping at the farmers market. It's just a fun way to shop like your at a festival. Plus I think it's essential to support local farmers. It's so nice to put a face to your food and to know where it came from.
